Undersea Fun or Terror? You Decide
Sorry about missing yesterday folks — just can’t kick this summer cold issue.
But I’m back. Good thing too. Just in case any of you are recently engaged and planning a nice spring wedding next year have I got the honeymoon for you!
Where you ask? Well underwater of course — you didn’t think I’d say the Hilton now did you? According to site reservation details the Poseidon Undersea Resort is set to launch after September 17, 2007. The Poseidon Resort, located in (or under I guess) the Poseidon Mystery Island in Fiji.
I saw this first on an architecture forum and was thinking it was a joke. But decided to investigate further. Is it a joke? Who knows. My detective skills aren’t that polished. I did however find an article posted in a copy of of a publication by incentiveworld.com and an actual website highlighting the resort. It’s a pretty flashy site so if it is a joke — it’s a great one.

“spotlight exotic destinations … exciting resorts … incentive cities … and much, much more”
The resort will feature 24 underwater suites, 5,000 acre lagoon, revolving underwater restaurant, and even a wedding chapel.

And I’m thinking this is supposed to be a view from above the suites.
First off I have to give props to another cool blogger for saying what I’m thinking:
“I’m sorry, but this thing has “white elephant” stamped all over it. I see algae all over the windows, dying reefs all around, endless annoying leaks, and tame, overfed fish. It will make a great setting for an undersea disaster movie, however. Hmm. “Poseidon II.” A presidential visit, terrorists, marauding sea life. The thing practically writes itself…”
I agree. Did anyone else see Jaws II when they were a kid? I think that was the one where Jaws slammed into the glass repeatedly as people screamed in terror. That movie pretty much signed away any chances of you getting me into a resort like this. After Jaws I barely liked the bathtub.
The other downside is cost. Initial quotes to stay at the Poseidon are $15,000 per person or $30,000 per couple for a week. Well, if one of you wants to make it a date, I think I can reasonably plan on chipping in about 2%.

The cost alone is insane. But some people will probably pay for it.
I lived in Hawaii for years and spent a lot of time scuba diving–and there are many many places where you will see hundreds of fish (maybe thousands) and all kinds of exotic sea life. We always saw huge schools of fish, and regularly saw turtles, moray eels, sharks, dolphins, etc.
I think the tricky part would be building it and then getting the marine life to come back, after the reef system in the area has been disrupted. I’m sure it will, but it could be several seasons…

No thanks. For that amount of money I can spend several months in a pretty posh oceanfront beach cottage on the NC coast during the off season.

As someone who likes neither heights nor depths (widths are fine except in the case of my hips and thighs), I have two words in response to the concept of this type of “resort”:

That hotel would be super cool, but not at that price. I think my biggest problem would be that the rooms don’t seem very private. I would only want the fish to be able to see me in my “room”.

So… A BIG FAT no thanks huh. Well, you are all very smart readers and double thanks to Susan and her extra special good point about others being able to see into your room. I hadn’t even considered that. Egad can you imagine a nice family snorkeling event passing by your room at a “bad” moment.
Dad would be saying, “Hey look kids a starfish, a school of fish, a… naked lady! Ah!” Young boy gets all excited.
Wait you can’t talk under water what am I saying?

Having been involved with this from the beginning, i can tell you that it will get built…just a matter of time. For those who feel that it may leak, grow algae, have dying reefs etc etc, it sows the ignorance associated with people who have no connection. But yeah…i guess you are right….they would build it with all those problems in mind and not anticipate them….!!
IT is easy for the knockers to come out and criticize….kinda sounds like the government doesn’t it?

Fiji Yauta - hello, thanks for stopping by… and for leaving a great comment for the other side of this coin. Are you involved with the actual building of this, or planning? Although I still would not stay in any sort of underwater anything (I was not kidding about the Jaws phobia) I am interested in hearing how people go about with a HUGE project like this. Funding, loopholes, the sheer mechanics of it must be overwhelming.
